GCST MAR 10 - STREETSON SCORES SOLID DEBUT WIN
By Graham Potter | Thursday, March 11, 2010
Gold Coast, March 10, 2010. Track - Slow 6. Rail - Out 7.5m 1400-400, out 5.5m remainder. Maiden Handicap - 1200m. Time: 1-11.03. (carrying 56.5kg). 1 Streetson; 2 Holding The Fort; 3 Dubailand.
Streetson won a keen battle with his market rival Dubailand over the first 150m to take the lead early and, once in front, the Alicia Willick trained chestnut led his rivals a merry dance.
Dubailand took a trail behind the leader but she was, in effect, always chasing and she simply had no answer to the strength of the winner who powered away soon after turning into straight to have his race run long before he crossed the line.
Holding the Fort proved best of the rest, going past Dubailand at the 200m to run home in a lonely second spot, 2.50 length behind Streetson and 2.25 lengths ahead of Dubailand, who did enough to claim third place.
The manner in which the field was stretched out behind that either means it was Streetson was beating little of note or he was showing himself to have good potential.
Either way, it was a solid debut. His next run will tell us more.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Alicia Willick: “He didn’t race as a two-year-old, but we didn’t have him then. Les Cowell had him then and my dad decided to go into partnership with Les with four horses and this is one of them.
“He went for a spell and I’ve had him for about ten weeks in work now. He’s a lovely horse and that’s a good start.” Jockey Jim Byrne: “It’s run probably the fastest time of the day for that sort of grade of horse. Full credit has got to go to Alicia (Willick). She said the horse goes pretty good. She made sure she set it for a race and she got it dead-right.
“The thing I liked about the horse was that it put itself in the race straight away and then relaxed so you were able to rate the horse. When I asked it to go it really accelerated to the line and, to be honest, it was a fairly soft win in the end.
“It was laying in and that was the only reason why I had to do anything ... just to make certain it stayed on a straight path and didn’t get in on the top of the fence sort of thing, because it was wanting to get in.
“As I say, full credit to connections and Alicia because she’s done a great job.”
PRICE FLUCTUATIONS: Winner (Streetson): 6.00 in to 4.00 out to 4.20. Favourite (Dubailand): 3.10 out to 3.80 in to 3.60. Finished third.
STEWARDS REPORT EXTRACT: Devil's Angel was declared a late scratching at 12.23 p.m. by order of stewards when the horse was unable to be loaded. Connections were advised that they must provide two further barrier certificates for Devil's Angel before it again races.
Gabarlis Girl (D. Tanti) and Streetson (J. Byrne) were both a little slow to jump. Dalingi (D. Barron) jumped away awkwardly, shifted out and made contact with Size Zero (D. Griffin).
Whitey (J. Taylor) was caught wide in the early and middle stages of the event.
Approaching the 800m Dubailand (C. Munce) had to be steadied to avoid the heels of Streetson, which shifted in when not sufficiently clear. J. Byrne the rider of Streetson was cautioned and advised to provide more clearance when crossing.
A post race veterinary examination of Gabarlis Girl revealed the horse to be suffering from mild metabolic heat syndrome.
