ADELAD ROMPS HOME IN THE GARDEN CITY GUINEAS

By Graham Potter | Saturday, September 23, 2023

The Tony and Maddysen Sears trained Adelad stepped up to the plate in no uncertain terms when he trounced his opposition in the Listed Magic Millions Garden City Guineas over 1625m at Toowoomba on September 23 – Weetwood Raceday.

The three-year-old son of Adelaide, who was surprisingly easy to back at a starting price of $8 after landing a city win at Eagle Farm in his prevbious start, made every use of both his home track advantage and his good barrier draw (he jumped from barrier three) with Andrew Mallyon settling the Sears trained runner in a comfortable fourth then fifth position, on the rail and no more than four lengths back, in the early part as the field went down the back straight.

Mallyon wasn’t about to die wondering though when the field approached the home.

Riding as if he was on the best horse in the race (which would prove to be the case), Mallyon quickly switched Adelad three wide into clear galloping room just before the point of the home turn and moved up to third place on straightening, now just a length-and-a-half behind the $18 chance Capital Cee, who had hit the front after likewise making an early move for home.

Mallyon had Adelad rolling now though, and he continued with his run which carried him into the lead at the 200m mark. Once there, Adelad’s sustained a strong, match winning run to the line, never letting anyone else into the race over the concluding stages while winning every bit as easily as the official two length margin suggests.

Red Defcon, the $6 second favourite, ran on late to claim second place for trainer Matt Kropp, making it a Toowoomba based training quinella.

Capital Cee stayed on for third, narrowly ahead of the Bjorn baker trained race favourite Bobby Shiraz ($3.40) who had every chance in the running, but who, like the rest, could not match Adelad’s sterling effort down the home straight.

Adelad is now a three-time winner from nine starts with $209 750 banked in prize-money.

Other notable results for the Sears stable on Weetwood Day included Yellow Brick’s great run in the Weetwood itself (see separate story) for the closest of closest second places, and Baanone’s spirited third place in the Toowoomba Cup where he finished less than two lengths off the winner after coming from second last entering the home straight with Angela Jones riding for luck and taking the shortest way home to help propel Baanone into the official placings.
