WINNO'S WINNERS: EAGLE FARM, OCTOBER 21, 2023
By Darren Winningham | Friday, October 20, 2023
EAGLE FARM this week. The track is rated ‘Good’ and the rail is out 3 metres for the entire circuit.
Jim Byrne is back in the saddle this weekend. He had a ride at Ipswich on Wednesday and a couple at Gatton yesterday. It’s great to see him back after some surgery kept him out for an extended period of time.
Time to look at the program.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
A BM90 over 2212 metres. Not a fan of the race.
Sears Racing have Red Wave (6) stepping up in distance and down in the weights. Looks ideally placed and Cejay Graham will ride – she is riding in superb form and with Bailey Wheeler sidelined for a period of time she will be looking to consolidate her lead at the head of the 2023/24 Brisbane Apprentice Jockey’s Premiership.
Selections:
6 – Red Wave 4 – Linthorpe Lad 8 – Tapildoodledo 1 – Bonny Ezra
Race 2
Two-year-old fillies. Les Ross Racing saddling 6 out of the 12 runners!
I like the last start winner Mishani Lily (1) with Sam Collett to run boldly again.
Keep your eye on the first starter Mishani Aloha (9) who won a trial in bold fashion – Mark Du Plessis will ride.
Territory Ash (4) seemed to run about in the straight on debut to go under by a narrow margin. Is trained by Liam Birchley and a senior rider goes on for this run – Jimmy Orman.
The Edmonds Racing team may have an exciting one here in Accelar (5) for the Lucky Clover Thoroughbreds Syndication. She won a trial at Beaudesert in fast time. My spies on the Gold Coast tell me she has plenty of ability. Martin Harley will ride her in her debut run. There has been an avalanche of support since the markets opened – firming from $4.60 to $3.80.
Selections:
4 – Territory Ash 5 – Accelar 1 – Mishani Lily 9 – Mishani Aloha
Race 3
The first leg of the early Quaddie with ten races on the card. Three-year-old runners over the mile.
Inca Trail (3) comes to QLD from the astute Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou yards in NSW. They rarely miss when they target runners here. Ryan Maloney will ride. The gelding won his maiden over the mile last time out at Goulburn.
Portorosa (6) is trained by Annabel Neasham. She cracked her maiden last time out over the mile at the Sunshine Coast three weeks ago – Ben Thompson will ride.
Red Defcon (4) goes back up to the mile after being dropped back to 1400 metres – look for a bold performance now she is back up to the mile. Samantha Collett will ride.
Jim Byrne will ride All Valour (5) for Desleigh Forster - a formidable combination – maybe it will be a dream city welcome back for Jimmy!
Selections:
3 – Inca Trail 6 – Portorosa 4 – Red Defcon 5 – All Valour
Race 4
Class 3 over 1815 metres.
The Cody Morgan trained Satay Chicken (3) has the winkers going on for this run. Last time out it got run down late here over this distance. Cejay Graham’s 2kg claim will come in handy here. Nothing like winner – winner – chicken dinner!
I Am The Empire (2), trained by Annabel Neasham, is second up here over a more suitable distance – has a solid second up record and the blinkers are coming off for this run. Damien Thornton has the ride – I think there will be a dramatic improvement in this race.
The Barry Lockwood runner Maurice’s Medad (5) is third up here with Martin Harley riding. I think that he needs to show something here. In his first two starts for the stable he has been well supported and not really fired - the nose roll goes on.
Andalus (10) from the John O’Shea yards in Sydney is here looking for a win second up. Has a mountain of gear changes – too many to list here. I cannot have him on top – nor can I support the short odds of $2.60 - maybe the Maloney magic can get him to do something here but this runner would be my lay of the day.
Selections:
3– Satay Chicken 2 – I Am The Empire 5 – Maurice’s Medad 10 – Andalus Rough chance – (6) Tenzing
Race 5
Class 6 over 1600 metres.
Regal Pom (3) was a last start winner here over 1500 metres – seemed to have some improvement left in him. Trained by Annabel Neasham – Ryan Maloney will ride. He may just take him to the lead and dictate the speed and win here.
Mark Currie has two runners here. Chatty Lady (4) has Jimmy Orman aboard. I think this is the best chance out of his two runners. She just seems to be racing the preparation as if she is looking for further. With the good tempo in the race look for her to be thundering home late.
The stablemate is Cottee (6) – with Angela Jones in the saddle – she won at huge odds here a fortnight ago. She drew wide on that occasion, and she went forward and held all the challengers at bay late with a narrow win. She has drawn barrier 6 – I think that she will be ridden quieter in this race and will be letting down late. I suppose I had better give a shout out to co-owner Basil Nolan – she cannot win this weekend champion!
Chase My Crown (7) comes from the mid north NSW coast – trained by Wayne Wilkes. A last start winner at Rosehill in a class 3 grade. She ran well there – up in grade down in weights – she may just be a surprise packet – Jake Bayliss has the ride.
Some rough chances to Kipling’s Journey and Contribute.
Open field this – play wide.
Selections:
3 – Regal Pom 4 – Chatty Lady 6 – Cottee 7 – Chase My Crown Rough chance – (9) Kipling’s Journey & (11) Contribute
Race 6
Last leg of the early Quaddie. St Rita’s Cup over 1600 metres.
I think Chris Waller Racing will trifecta the race!
Shibli (4) just keeps winning – looks for a hat trick of wins in this feature race. Jimmy Orman is back in the saddle – should be difficult to beat.
Quality Time (6) is second up after a solid effort first up over 1400 metres – I think there will be further improvement here – Mark Du Plessis will ride.
The top weight Great House (1) resumed a fortnight ago – put back to the rear of the field prior to storming home late in an eye-catching run and finished fifth. Damien Thornton retains the ride. Has a very good second up record – 6 starts, 2 wins and 2 placings. Superb each way odds as well at $14.
Selections:
4 – Shibli 6 – Quality Time 1 – Great House 5 – Stuttering Rough chances – (3) Evocator (4) Flying Joy & (7) Oakfield Prince
Race 7
First leg of the Quaddie – open field here over 1400 at BM68.
Some serious speed in this race.
Hang Five (9) is trained by Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hoysted. He normally gets back in his races and works home late. For this to occur he must have the speed on – he should get those conditions in this race with several runners likely to go forward and put serious speed into the race. Justin Huxtable will ride.
Fixated (8) is from the Robert Heathcote yards. Drawn terribly in barrier 17. Was solid last time out for his new stable. This is his third run for the new yards – I think that Blake Spriggs will have to ride for luck. He would look mighty fine getting past the winning post in the NSW Mi-Runners colours as well – always good to see those NSW colours winning something in QLD!
Evocator (6) from the Barry Lockwood stable won here at a midweek meeting first up for the new stable. Didn’t fire second up at Doomben. A month freshen up – Martin Harley riding - and being able to be ridden quietly could run a bold race.
The early markets have Cranky Harry (5) favourite. He does have a solid record at this track and distance – trained by Jack Bruce with Ben Thompson riding. I just think he has been disappointing this prep – happy to play wide.
Some rough chances to Moktaffy (14) and Belle Tycoon (17), who is looking for four wins in a row. Trained by Ethan Ensby – I wonder if he will wear his $4 K-Mart sunglasses to Eagle Farm?
Selections:
9 – Hang Five 8 – Fixated 6 – Evocator 5 – Cranky Harry Rough chances – (14) Moktaffy & (17) Belle Tycoon
Race 8
BM75 race over 1400 metres.
O’Dea & Hoysted train Secret Tales (9) who resumed over 1200 metres at Toowoomba. She likes the longer distances and 1400 second up is right up her alley. Second up record is tremendous with 3 wins from 4 starts. I see Jag Guthmann-Chester will ride her as well – poorly drawn in barrier 12 – she gets back in her running, but there is some solid speed in the race so she should be flying home late. She was scratched last weekend. She was as much as $31 Wednesday morning prior to scratchings – currently around the $19 mark.
Sha Of Gomer (13) gets in nicely at the weights for the Chris Waller Racing team. Has had a month freshen up since an unlucky second on this track. A recent solid hit out in a barrier trial should see him race well fresh. Jimmy Orman is booked to ride. Interesting fact – he has only had 2 career wins – and Orman has ridden him on both occasions.
Titanium (4) was desperately unlucky last weekend over the mile. A quick back up for this Barry Lockwood runner – Justin Huxtable will ride again. The drop in distance will not be a problem – especially with several early scratchings.
Edmonds Racing’s runner Storm The Fortress (9) will be ridden by Martin Harley. He was super second up on this track over 1200 metres – the extra distance will be right up his alley. He has been heavily backed in the early markets. Has never been defeated third up.
Selections:
8 – Secret Tales 13 – Sha Of Gomer 4 – Titanium 9 – Storm The Fortress
Race 9
Open class over 1200 metres.
The Robert Heathcote trained Miss Margot May (6) is undefeated first up. She has won 4 from 4 when resuming. Normally first up she races over shorter distances and settles towards the rear of the field and races home late. There are a couple of runners who will put some speed into the race, and this should be of benefit. Damien Thornton has the ride for the first time. He did ride her in a recent trial where she went well.
Pocket Full (12) is flying. Trained by Stuart Kendrick he is looking for a hat trick of wins. He goes up in class – down in the weights and looks ideally placed with Ben Thompson riding.
Munitions (7), who has his first run in QLD for Richard Litt, ran a great second at huge odds - $31. Justin Huxtable will ride again.
Chris Munce trains Jetty (5). Do not let this runner get under your guard. He seems to always pop up first up. He has won three races first up – normally at huge odds as well. Mark Du Plessis will ride him again. He has a 100% strike rate on him – winning 2 from 2 on him. He is around $18 in the markets.
Light Of Boom (14), trained by Adam Campton, could be a blow out chance as well. He has been racing on smaller tracks. The blinkers go on – big price as well $26. Has been scratched from the last race for this race.
Selections:
6 – Miss Margot May 12 – Pocket Full 5 – Jetty 7 – Munitions Rough chance – (14) Light of Boom
Race 10
Race 10 – big day – A No metro wins race over 1200 metres to finish the day – hopefully you are cashed up going into this race.
Lost In Transit (4) dropped back to 1000 metres last time – and got going in the final 50 metres just to get pipped on the post> The extra distance should suit this Stuart Kendrick runner – Ryan Maloney will ride. Has drawn well to get the run of the race.
Standing Order (7) was super impressive first up. He led them up, controlled the speed and was too good for them. I probably would have had him on top except for barrier 15 and his second up record. No wins second up – but in saying that this is probably his easiest career assignment second up – he could change that stat! Jimmy Orman retains the ride on him.
Thatfeelsbetter (8) is from the O’Dea & Hoysted yards. Drawn woeful in barrier 17 – he will need to be ridden for luck by Boris Thornton. He normally can race midfield – there is some speed in the race – he could pop up at each way odds.
David Vandyke trains My Snow Queen (11) who has drawn barrier 1 with Martin Harley to ride.
Selections:
4 – Lost In Transit 7 – Standing Order 8 – Thatfeelsbetter 11 – My Snow Queen Rough chance – (5) Casino Lord _______________________________________________________________________

Looks like a one-on-one battle with Jimmy Orman and Ryan Maloney – Orman to get it done.
