WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, NOVEMBER 25, 2023
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, November 23, 2023
DOOMBEN this week where the track, at the time of writing, is currently in the ‘soft range’ after being a heavy 9 on Wednesday. The rail is out 4 metres for the entire circuit. Still, with the rain having lingered all week, we should probably look at runners who like the wet. It is Tattersall’s race- day of racing as well – always a good day.
Time to look at the program – will be brief as I am worried there may be a few scratchings depending on the track conditions.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
The stayers go around here at BM78 level over 2200 metres. A small field.
Annabel Neasham and her apprentice Bailey Wheeler pair with I Am The Empire (4). Looks well placed and will handle the wet track.
Selections:
4 – I Am The Empire 5 – Kureder 3 – Flying Joy 2 – Early Thoughts
Race 2
The two-year-old runners race here – a very small but tricky field.
Munce Racing runners have all been solid this season. Just going on the form of the stable I give the filly Fireupzous (6) a good chance at odds - $12 to win on debut here - with Kyle Wilson Taylor to ride.
Selections:
6 – Fireupzous 4 – Trapeze Alert 2 – Astapor 5 – Mishani Ego
Race 3
The first leg of the early Quaddie with ten races on the card. BM58 over 1350 metres.
Tony Gollan Racing is well represented here with four runners. I think that he may even provide the trifecta and the first four in the race with any luck.
Miss Tambo (9) is a last start winner on this track at a midweek meeting. If she brings that form here she should be winning again. The start prior to that she was a gallant second to Blakmax (3) at Eagle Farm. They may finish 1 & 2 again – but in the reverse order.
Selections:
9 – Miss Tambo 3 – Blakmax 4 – Aint He Grand 8 – Warby Rough chance – (6) Thankful Heart & (11) Sleigh Queen
Race 4
The three-year-olds face the starter here over 1350 metres.
Reign Of Power (4) won on debut for Jack Bruce. The time and performance were good. Ben Thompson retains the ride. At $12 it looks solid each way play.
Last start winner here Golden Decade (1) looks well placed again for the Matthew Dunn Racing team. Ryan Maloney will ride again – just concerned that the heavy weight may tell late – however, in saying that he was strong to the line in his last win.
Selections:
4 – Reign Of Power 1 – Golden Decade 6 – Spicy Legend 7 – Exotique Miss
Race 5
BM78 runners over 1350 metres.
Last start winner Tojaki (8) from the Kendrick Racing stables looks well in here again – Robbie Dolan will ride.
The odds-on early market favourite Midnight In Tokyo (3) is trained by Annabel Neasham - Bailey Wheeler will ride. She was another last start winner – she is well placed – despite the huge weight. I am just looking for some value in this race.
Selections:
8 – Tojaki 3 – Midnight In Tokyo 2 – Bitcoin Baby 5 – April In Augusta
Race 6
Last leg of the early Quaddie. Class 3 over 1615 metres.
Madame Odette (14) was well supported when resuming over 1300 metres. That was much too short for her. Second up over the mile and in restricted grade she looks the winner. Trained by Gollan Racing and Ben Thompson in the saddle – just get on!
Alberich (4) looks the only danger from the Chris Waller Racing team with Jimmy Orman riding. Last start winner at a midweek meeting here – he has the bonus of some solid efforts on heavy tracks – keep safe.
Selections:
14 – Madame Odette 4 – Alberich 1 - Cacofonix 9 – Zaher Rough chance – (11) Prefer Us
Race 7 Eureka Stud Tattersall’s Classic
First leg of the Quaddie – Open class for fillies and mares over 1200 metres.
Robert Heathcote Racing has two recent winners lining up here, Extremist (2) with Robbie Dolan aboard and Ekaterina (4) with Michael Rodd to ride.
I like Ekaterina (4). She seems to come back in a fine fettle. I think she will be strong to the line as well.
Extremist (2) could not have been more impressive when she won the Keith Noud. She has paid in spades with the handicapper giving her a fair share of weight after that win.
Comrade Rosa (1) will strip fitter after her first up effort and normally goes well second up.
Eagle Nest (10), the NSW raider from the Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou stable has posted a hat trick of wins over 1100 metres. She looks like the likely leader and Jimmy Orman will ride. She could just dominate in front and get away with the race. I am just concerned about 1200 metres on a heavy track.
Selections:
4 – Ekaterina 5 – Eagle Nest 1 – Comrade Rosa 2 – Extremist Rough chance – (6) Aureus Angel
Race 8 TATTERSALL’S RECOGNITION STAKES – LISTED
Listed race over 1350 metres.
Tony Gollan trains Zarastro (10) who resumed and was run down late in the Keith Noud by Extremist (Race 7 – number 2). He has a very good second up record – Angela Jones will ride. He will be out in front for a long way.
I like a roughie here – Irish Songs (4) –at around $15. Trained by Louise White, Larry Cassidy will ride. He just seems to thrive at Doomben especially when the sting is out of the ground and the speed is on. Look, I could be way off the mark, but I think I may get a result here.
The Vowels (14) is trained by Edmonds Racing. He is third up here after two runs at Eagle Farm. I just wonder with the sting out of the ground, the extra distance and Doomben, we will not see the best of him here. Cejay Graham will ride, and he will get back and storm home late.
Selections:
4 – Irish Songs 13 – Zarastro 14 – The Vowels 2 – Startantes Rough chances – (1) Scallopini
Race 9
BM85 over 1615 metres.
Gollan Racing has Princess Rhaenys (5) second up here at a suitable distance. She resumed over 1350 metres and was hitting the line strong at the finish – Ryan Maloney will ride – she should be thereabout when the judge calls a halt to the race.
The Catch (10) is trained by Jack Bruce – has been up a while now but continues to turn in solid efforts – keep safe.
Other than that, unless something stands up the rest of the field looks very limited.
Selections:
5 – Princess Rhaenys 10 – The Catch 1 – Zoushack 3 – Rousseau
Race 10
A massive field over 1110 metres at BM80 class level.
There are a few early scratchings here. It is an open field
Tony Gollan trains Liquor (17) who was impressive at 1000 metres last time out winning at Eagle Farm – Angela Jones retains the ride. Drawn in barrier 14 but should have the speed to get across.
Perfect Mission (19) is trained by Annabel Neasham and will be ridden by Bailey Wheeler – second up here could fill a place.
Ralphie (8) is a last start winner. Trained by Gary Doughty, could show up here again.
Selections
17 – Liquor 19 – Perfect Mission 8 – Ralphie 13 – Reliable Ruby Rough chances – (9) Flaming Conquest ________________________________________________________________________
Jockeys Challenge
Looks like a one-way road here with the current rides – Jimmy Orman to take it out.
