DOOM MAR 13 - THREE-IN-A-ROW FOR JAZZ HEART
By Graham Potter | Wednesday, March 17, 2010
Doomben, March 13, 2010. Track - Slow 6. Rail - True. Class 6 Plate (4yo and up- Set Weights) - 1615m. Time: 1-37.68. (Carrying 56kg). 1 Jazz Heart; 2 Hangover Henry; 3 Jonka Tiki.
The Bryan Guy trained Jazz Heart continued his fine run of form when he scored his third successive win at Doomben on Saturday.
Guy has placed the four-year-old well. All of his three recent wins have come under set weights conditions.
Jazz Heart raced in the second half of the field in the early part before starting a long run out wide on the track as he looked to make ground in the sweep to the turn. The gelding was full of running and he did all that jockey Jim Byrne asked to improve his position up to fifth on straightening as he cornered a touch over four lengths behind the leaders Jonka Tiki and Pride Of Power.
Pride Of Power got the better of Jonka Tiki to go to the head of affairs coming through the 200m while Jazz Heart continued his run in the straight, moving forward in relentless fashion. With Byrne hard at work, the gelding wore down his opposition to go past Pride Of Power and get to the front with 120m left to run.
Jazz Heart never missed a beat and he was good enough to be able to extend his advantage over the concluding stages to score by a convincing 1.80 lengths from the game Hangover Henry who had tried to stay with the winner after Jazz Heart had moved past him at the 150m mark.
Jonka Tiki came back to head Pride Of Power in the final strides to snare third placing.
WINNER FEEDBACK: Trainer Bryan Guy: “It was a strong win today. He had to work from a long way back around them. He had a long run and just kept going, so it was a real strong win today.
“I think stepping out in these set weights has been quite nice. That’s three-in-a-row. He’s going very well now. We’ve done well being able to place him in those races, but I think he is nearly Open Company now. I think if he comes back to a Class 6 he’ll get about 62kg.
“I was half thinking about throwing him in the Tatts Cup next week. They’ve moved it to Saturday. It’s over a mile ... a Listed race. I just don’t know yet. I might just give him a short break.
There are a couple of nice races over the carnival, and normally there is a weight-for-age race over a mile which is very ordinary, so we might have a crack at that.”
Jockey Jim Byrne: “At the 600 ... yeah, I had to start rolling forward on him. Look, his last start I kinda took the punt that runs were going to come for him. He is a horse that likes to pick himself up and roll into his races. He is not a sit and sprint horse, so you’ve really got to ascertain when you should be moving on him.
“Today I was really going to weigh it up a little bit, because I knew I would have to go a little bit deep, but they didn’t go that quick so they were always going to sprint home.
“The mile obviously suits him well. He still shows a really good turn of foot over the mile ... that being when you can crawl into the race. If it is a true run race, you know, the horse can run you home in sub- 35. That really puts him into a wonderful position.
“You know, he is racing in career best form so full credit to the horse and to (Trainer) Bryan Guy.”
