FIFTY-UP FOR FAB'S COWBOY
By Graham Potter | Saturday, December 2, 2023
Look up the form of Fab’s Cowboy and you might do a double-take.
One hundred and forty-seven starts ... fifty wins, thirty-one seconds and twelve third placings ... that’s right, FIFTY wins.
The Bevan Johnson trained ‘legend’ reached the fifty-win milestone at Mt Isa on Saturday, at last putting an end to a sixteen-run winless streak ... the longest in his career ... to claim that rare distinction.
But, of course, he can be forgiven for keeping his connections on tenterhooks as he honed in on that milestone. He is a twelve-year-old after-all, but it was arguably more the fact that he has been carrying big weights against younger rivals that brought the wait for the fiftieth win into play.
To date, Fab’s Cowboy has won four-in-a-row on two occasions, has twice made it three wins on the trot and has claimed two back-to-back victories no less than seven times in a career that dates back to his inauspicious debut run at Roma back in November 2015, which gave no hint of what was to come.”
“He's part of the family and part of the furniture around here,” Johnson told Racenet. "He gets around and acts like a three-year-old. He will let us know when he has had enough, and we will never do anything against his will.
"Racing is what he wants to do, he is calling the shots at the moment.”
The ‘fifty-up’ places Fab’s Cowboy just one win behind the record of Walk Cool who won fifty-one races from one hundred and thirty-three starts ... with forty-six minor placings ... in a career which spanned a period from July 1988 to August 1995.
