Ryan Moore was crowned the LONGINES World Best Jockey for the fourth time since the inception of the award at the Gala Dinner in Hong Kong on Friday night in a glittering lead up to the running of the LONGINES Hong Kong International Races (HKIR) on Sunday at Sha Tin racecourse.
The award commenced in 2014 and Moore won it in the first year. He also claimed this distinction in 2016 and 2021 and now equals Frankie Dettori as the only jockey to have won the award on four occasions.
The title is attained under the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) by giving points to each jockey for the top one hundred Group 1 races around the world. A win earns the rider 12 points, a second placing 6 points and a third placing 4 points.
In a season where he dominated in Europe and won feature races in Australia, Moore has dominated the points scoring in 2023 polling 36 more points than any of his rivals –winning the Award with a total score of 156 points. He posted wins in eight of the top 100 Group 1 races.
Frankie Dettori was runner up posting 120 points whilst last year’s winner James McDonald finished third with 116 points.
In accepting the award Moore said, “Hong Kong is the most competitive racing in the world. It is very hard to win here. The way the club (HKJC) runs racing here, couldn’t be a higher standard.”
Moore also touched on some of his highlights of the year saying, “the Irish Derby is probably the most important race of the year on a very special horse, Auguste Rodin.” He also rode the same horse for Aidan O’Brien to win the LONGINES Breeder’s Cup at Santa Anita in the USA.
The LONGINES company continues to have a special relationship with horse racing across the world. They support this unique Award and continue to sponsor race meetings across the year.
The final show piece in the calendar year is the LONGINES HKIR where horses, trainers, owners and jockeys from all around the world make their way to Hong Kong chasing a share of the HK$118 million prize money that is on offer.
