AN IPSWICH DOUBLE FOR TEAM SEARS

By Graham Potter | Friday, December 29, 2023

A race-day double is nothing new to the Tony and Maddysen Sears training partnership and they put another double on the board when Inspired Dream and My Spy both saluted at Ipswich on December 29 ... providing a nice flourish for the stable to round off 2023.

Inspired Dream’s win came in a Maiden Handicap over 1200m as a $1.95 favourite.

The daughter of Divine Prophet had raced twelve times for her previous stable (Teresa Bateup), where her best results were two runner-up finishes, over 1400m and 1425m, before transferring to the Sears yard.

With a five month break from racing, Team Sears started Inspired Dream off over 1000m for her first two starts for her new stable, tipped the distance test up marginally to up 1100m for her third start as she built up to race fitness ... and then pushed on to a more favourable 1200m race on December 16 in which she only just failed to secure the first win of her career.

Next, it was 1200m again at Ipswich and this time Inspired Dream made no mistake, landing the odds with a length in hand over the runner-up Captain Fenkel, the $3.10 second favourite.

My Spy’s win came in a QTIS Three-Year-Old Maiden Plate over 1350m.

Like Inspired Dream, My Spy was a runner who had come to the Sears yard from another trainer, Annabel Neasham, where the gelding had four runs without winning, although he did come ever so close in his last run for Neasham, failing to get the chocolates by the narrowest of margins.

That run came in July 2023 ... and the son of Better Than Ready’s first start for the Sears camp took place at Toowoomba on November 25 with a follow-up run in town on December 8 ... both of those runs being unplaced efforts.

There was improvement to come though and My Spy provided that enhanced level of performance at Ipswich as a warm $3.40 favourite when doing enough to see off Geraldine’s Wish ($7.50) by a tidy enough 0.30 lengths.

That made it two new winners in the stable on the day, always a satisfying result for any racing stable.
