WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, FEBRUARY 10, 2024

By Darren Winningham | Friday, February 9, 2024

DOOMBEN this week. The track is rated ‘Soft’. The rail is out 0.5 metres for the entire circuit. There is some odd weather leading up to the meeting – hopefully we race on a reasonable surface.

It was my Birthday on Friday – so thanks to everyone who sent me messages and texts – much appreciated! Happy Birthday to my dad who celebrates his birthday on Saturday – hopefully I can tip him a few winners so he can afford dinner somewhere nice!

Straight into it.

NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.

Race 1

The two-year-old runners race here – over 1110 metres.

Fields Amour (4) won on debut at Ipswich - is trained by Lee Freedman with Sam Collett to ride. Looks well placed in this race.

The two representatives from Kris Lee's stable at Newcastle Excedaqa (6) and Miss Musslinger (5) are both not without a chance in this race.

Selections:

4 – Fields Amour
6 – Exceedaqa
5 – Miss Busslinger
1 – Aikau

Race 2

Three-year-old runners, Open grade over 1200 metres.

Vindicta (4) is trained by Jack Bruce and will be ridden by Angela Jones. He looked like he needed 1200 metres at his last start. Third career run here – he looks like he will be hard to hold out.

Do not underestimate Mishani Gangster (1) who is trained by Les Ross who celebrated his 60th birthday during the week – Happy Birthday LES! This gelding loves 1200 metres and this track. Despite the huge weight, the 3 kilogram claim for Tahlia Fenlon could see him extremely competitive here at the massive odds of $26.

Selections:

4 – Vindicta
1 – Mishani Gangstar
2 – Fukubana
6 – Laydownlilly

Race 3

The first leg of the early Quaddie with ten races on the card – a race at BM85 level over 2000 metres.

Chris Munce trains Southern Stock (9) who has been racing consistently recently. He raced up in distance this week after running over 1800 metres at the Sunshine Coast where he finished off the race very strongly. The extra distance will suit him this weekend and he has a good record on the track. Jake Bayliss will ride.

Caboche (4) is trained by Chris Waller and has been racing well in Sydney in recent weeks. It appears the stable has sent him north to try and post to win as he has been out of luck in his recent efforts. Jimmy Orman will ride.

Selections:

9 – Southern Stock
4 – Caboche
3 – Rogue Bear
10 – Artful Girl
Rough chance – (2) Koruto

Race 4

BM68 over 1600 metres.

Not a race I am keen on.

Smooth Torque (15) is trained by Matthew Dunn. Ryan Maloney will ride and with some early scratchings in the race looks ideally placed by the stable. Was a last start winner at this track and distance at a midweek meeting.

Selections:

15 – Smooth Torque
6 – Charlie’s Case
9 – O’Miss Behaving
3 – Granite Prince
Rough chance – (10) Sigourney

Race 5

This is a Class 1 race over 1350 metres.

Russian Mystic (1) is trained by the astute Barry Lockwood and Kyle Wilson Taylor will ride. His last start was at this track where he looked like the winner until he was rundown in the shadows of the post. I think he will get the job done here.

Quothquan (2) resumed here for John Dann and won a maiden class race over 1200 metres. The way he gets to the line the extra distance will be no trouble. Jake Molloy retains the ride here.
Jason Edwards is a trainer without luck presently. He’s For The Girls (5) is his runner with Martin Harley to ride. He has drawn poorly in barrier 15, but is down in grade here after contesting open three-year-old grade in his last start – I think he is tremendous each way at odds at around $31.

Selections:

1 – Russian Mystic
2 - Quothquan
5 – Hes For The Girls
11 – Soaring Phoenix
Rouch chance – (10) Infracombe Kid

Race 6

Last leg of the early Quaddie. A class 3 race over 1200 metres.

The Tony Gollan duo seem to have the race between them here – Damo Dayz (8) with Jimmy Orman to ride and John Rambo (2) with Ryan Maloney aboard. Both won their respective races last time out and will be hard to hold out here – take your pick – there is nothing between them!

Selections:

8 – Damo Dayz
2– John Rambo
3 – Party Spirit
5 – Naval Trader
Rough chance – (10) Strapparsi & (7) Clover’s Prince

Race 7

First leg of the Quaddie – BM85 level over 1200 metres.

Enterprise Pomme (3) is trained by Steven O’Dea and Matt Hoysted. Boris Thornton will ride. Freshened up for six weeks after a last start effort here. I think that she is better than these fresh.

Northern Express (5), trained by Michael Nolan, comes off a solid win last time out at the Sunshine Coast – Taylor Marshall will ride. Should appreciate the extra distance and has drawn well in barrier 1 to not have to spend a penny in the running.

Some rough chances to Mahbaby (10) and Crazy Train (11) who have performed well recently.

Selections:

3 – Enterprise Pomme
5 – Northern Express
10 – Mahbaby
11 – Crazy Train
Rough chances – (12) Jayanthi

Race 8

BM78 race over 1600 metres. The first leg of the Treble.

Last Chance Saloon (14) is a last start winner for David Vandyke. Michael Rodd retains the ride. He goes up in distance, however, the way he settled and hit the line last time out looked quite promising.

Anything Goes (5) is trained by Matthew Smith in Sydney who is attempting a hit and run mission to QLD – Jimmy Orman aboard. Has won at this distance and does like wet tracks – keep safe.

If you want a roughie Stuck With You (1) is around the $81 mark – despite the huge weight this Matthew Dunn Racing runner will have a 3 kilogram claim for apprentice Jake Molloy. He may just pop here on a track that he thrives at.

Selections:

14 – Last Chance Saloon
5 – Anything Goes
8 – Pentito
1 – Stuck With You
Rough chances – (6) Cocobrew Express

Race 9

Open grade race over 1350 metres.

Even race this. Last start winner Kinloch (2) from the Kris Lees Racing yards won at Sunshine Coast over 1400 metres. Was a very solid effort and looks like he will go on with it – another nice ride for Andrew Mallyon.

Boom Torque (3) won on Magic Millions Day and has had a freshen up since by the Matthew Dunn Racing team. He seemed to just get all the luck in the straight – it was a very good win – just not too sure whether the tempo of this race will suit him – Jimmy Orman will ride.

Hatchet (9) just keeps racing consistently for Robert Heathcote Racing. He gets back onto his favourite track where five of his six career wins have occurred. Kyle Wilson-Taylor will ride him from barrier 1.

Legal Esprit (4) is trained by Donald “Ducky” Baker. He just keeps racing well – maybe will fill a place at big odds. Michael Cahill has been booked to ride.

Selections:

2 – Kinloch
3 – Boom Torque
9 – Hatchcet
4 – Legal Esprit
Rough chances – (13) Hot Spring Gold

Race 10

A massive field over 1350 metres at BM78 level.

Hellavadancer (12) is trained by Kris Lees and Andrew Mallyon will ride – can they win the last two races back-to-back? This mare drew wide last start – pushed forward and controlled the race. Looks like she could post consecutive wins. She has drawn well here in barrier 6 and should get the run of the race.

Corfe Castle (7) is trained by Toby Edmonds. Is a last start winner at the Sunshine Coast and Jimmy Orman will ride. Up in grade, but he goes well on this track. Drawn to get the run of the race in barrier 4 – really it is hard to split my top two selections.

Selections

12 – Hellavadancer
7 – Corfe Castle
4 – Viminele
6 – Aton Of Delight
Rough chances – (11) Awol

Jockeys Challenge

Looks like a battle between Andrew Mallyon who has a tremendous book of rides and Jimmy Orman. I think Andrew may get the win in a narrow result.
