WINNO'S WINNERS: DOOMBEN, APRIL 13, 2024
By Darren Winningham | Thursday, April 11, 2024
DOOMBEN this week. Back to nine races with the track is rated ‘soft’ and the rail is out 3.5 metres for the entire circuit. The weather is supposed to be fine so there should be an improvement in the track, although the weather meteorologists got it wrong last weekend – the floods and storms did not eventuate.
Straight into it.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
The two-year-old runners race here over 1110 metres.
Mishani Lily (1) is trained by Les Ross and will be ridden by Jimmy Orman. Has had ad a freshen up since her last effort. She seems to go better on this track – keep safe.
Sambuca (2), trained by Lee Freedman, won at the Sunshine Coast when resuming. A recent barrier trial looked strong – Boris Thornton will ride again.
Tessatori (13) is a first starter from the Chris Meagher stables with Melea Castle riding. Her claim will be handy and the filly has the edition of a lugging bit.
Heart and Spirit (11) is a first starter from the Stuart Kendrick team at the Sunshine Coast. Bailey Wheeler hot off a winning treble last weekend will ride.
Chris Munce Racing has a few first starters as well – keep your eye on the markets in case there is any money for them – that is normally a good sign. On the barrier trials Divine Diamonds (10) looks the best. Has drawn wide in barrier 15 – that could be a problem.
Selections:
1 – Mishani Lily 2 – Sambuca 13 – Tessatori 11 – Heart and Spirit Rough chance – (10) Divine Diamonds
Race 2
Three-year-old runners over 2020 metres.
Found a roughie here in the William Kropp trained Bilpa Morea (10) will be a huge price – $14. Cejay Graham will ride. Dropped back in distance last time out at Gatton over a mile. The previous effort at Eagle Farm over 1835 metres looked like she would be suited over a longer distance. She is still a maiden!
Michael “Muppy” Hellyer will ride one for Bevan Laming – Subaqua (3). The gelding won his maiden at Ipswich over 2150 metres – a solid effort. At least it should run out the distance.
Ichiban (1) is trained by Chris Waller Racing – Jimmy Orman rides. Racing in midweek company – goes up in distance for the first time – take on trust.
Selections:
10 – Bilpa Morea 3 – Subaqua 1 – Ichiban 5 – Rhodes
Race 3
A BM78 over 2200 metres.
The Stuart Kendrick runner Disputed River (7) had no luck last time out at Eagle Farm and it was at 2400 metres. Back in distance will suit and Bailey Wheeler will ride.
Bak Da Man (8) defeated Disputed River (7) last time out. I think the tables can be turned here. This runner is trained by Jack Bruce – has several gear changes this week. Damien Thornton will ride.
Chayse N Artie (3) has been performing consistently. Back in distance, better suited here – Boris Thornton is up.
Could be a battle of the Thornton’s over the final 100 metres!
Selections:
7 – Disputed River 8 – Bak Da Man 3 – Chayse N Artie 5 – A Deel Of Humour
Race 4
Open class race over 1200 metres.
Tough race with many chances.
Chinny Boom (3) gets her chance to post a win in Open grade. She is carrying a huge weight that may be the difference between winning and losing. Cejay Graham’s 1.5-kilogram claim will assist. She has performed well at 1200 metres – but never won at this distance.
Bring Me Kash (8) is trained by Darryl Ward and Dale Smith will ride after winning on him last time out – another runner who has not won at the distance.
Selections:
3 – Chinny Boom 8 – Bring Me Kash 9 – Nashira 6 – Ned’s Gully
Race 5
This is a BM70 race over 1615 metres.
Tony Gollan Racing runners look like they can quinella the race.
I like Blazen Boots (11) with Ryan Maloney riding. Is third up here and was working home last start over a mile. That run should have topped him off for this weekend.
The stable mate is Tenzing (7) with Jimmy Orman aboard. Has drawn badly in barrier 16. He is second up. Has a solid second up record and a solid record over the mile.
Beef Week Princess (2) trained by Daniel Bowen and Danny Peisley, his great mate will ride. They are a solid combination when they combine – keep safe. She was beaten in the final stride last time out at Eagle Farm over the mile – she is right in this race.
Selections:
11 – Blazen Boots 7 – Tenzing 2 – Beef Week Princess 6 – Redwood Shadow Rough chance – (1) Commodus
Race 6
First leg of the Quaddie. A BM78 race over 1110 metres.
The Tony Gollan duo is well placed. Immoral (9) drew wide last start at Eagle Farm and had no luck from the barrier. He has a strong record at Doomben and has drawn barrier 1 with Orman riding – lots of plus signs here.
The stable mate is Muschialli (5) with Cejay Graham to ride. Drew wide as well at his last start and was kept wide throughout – forget the run. He is third up and does perform well at Doomben.
Lost In Transit (2) resumes for Stuart Kendrick. Has been trialling well – keep safe.
Xtravagant Star (7) is from the Ciaron Maher stables with Ryan Maloney riding. Has been racing consistently in NSW in higher class races. Looks well placed and has been well supported since the markets have opened.
Selections:
7 – Xtravagant Star 9 – Immoral 5 – Muschialli 2 – Lost In Transit Rough chance – (12) Apophis
Race 7
First leg of the Treble – Open fillies class race over 1350 metres.
Torabella (10) is trained by Tony Gollan. Has won her first two career starts. Drops back in distance after a freshen up. She has won both her starts by leading – has drawn well in barrier 2 and will lead again. Angela Jones will ride again – she will go fast in front and may be a sitting duck late.
Miss Joelene (1), trained by Kelly Schweida, resumed with a barnstorming effort at a midweek race at Doomben. She loves the speed on, and she gets those conditions here. I have some concerns with her second up record – however, she is a progressive type and if she is to go onto better races in the upcoming Carnival she should put this lot away despite the mammoth weight.
Betterletmedance (11) is trained by David Vandyke. Solid effort at the Gold Coast last time when the track was biased. She is down in the weights and will go well here after a freshen up. Damien Thornton will ride. She has drawn wide in barrier 13 – that may be an issue.
Miss Chenery (4) is a Chris Waller Racing filly who has had an eight week freshen up – look for her to sprint well fresh. Jake Bayliss will ride.
Selections:
1 – Miss Joelene 10 – Torabella 11 – Betterletmedance 4 – Miss Chenery
Race 8
Quality grade race over 1350 metres. A few of these runners are nominated across the program – it will be interesting to see what races they are declared for.
There is speed here. With that in mind I cannot overlook the stayer from Robert Heathcote Racing – Dune Forty Five (4) who just seems to thrive fresh and on ground with the sting out of it. Michael Rodd will ride him and at $12 - is a good each way chance.
Ranch Hand (1) has been scratched from race 4 to run in this. Solid effort last time out storming home late for the new stable – Gollan Racing. Gets in nicely at the weights in this grade – Ryan Maloney will ride. Only one concern he has not won in 90 weeks!
At Witz End (10) is trained by Daniel Bowen who is having a good run recently. Sam Collett will ride. The gelding has won his last two starts and is looking for a hat trick of wins.
Ocean Treaty (12) from the Steven O’Dea & Matt Hoysted yards didn’t fire a shot last preparation. She is better than that – she normally races well fresh – keep safe with Cejay Graham to ride.
Selections:
4 – Dune Forty Five 6 – Ranch Hand 10 – At Witz End 12 – Ocean Treaty Rough chance – (1) Oscar Zulu
Race 9
The last race of the program – an early afternoon – home we go!
BM78 grade race over 1350 metres.
Starzam (7) is second up here with Cejay Graham in the saddle. The gelding has a solid second up record and good statistics on the Doomben track. He has drawn perfectly to get a trail into the race from barrier 2.
Argyle Pink (12) is second up after winning first up at a huge price. The mare has drawn well in barrier 5 and Angela Jones will ride.
Evocator (6) was well backed late first up. He is second up here for trainer Barry Lockwood and apprentice Tahlia Felon will claim 3 kilograms – this will be handy.
Selections:
7 – Starzam 12 – Argyle Pink 6 – Evocator 19 – Tarps Rough chance – (11) Mayfair Spirit ____________________________________________________________________

Looks like a battle between Ryan Maloney, Cejay Graham and Jimmy Orman. I think Cejay may get the win in a narrow result.
