TRENT EDMONDS PUTS HIS NAME ON THE SCOREBOARD
By Graham Potter | Tuesday, April 16, 2024
Trainer Trent Edmonds saddled his first winner in his own right when Glens Top Hat won a BM58 Handicap at Bairnsdale on Monday.
Edmonds relocated to Victoria earlier this year and to set up his own stable at Pakenham after a prolonged spell as co-trainer with his father Toby Edmonds at the Gold Coast during which time the stable enjoyed Group 1 success with Tyzone in the Stradbroke.
Just to add a touch of tension to proceedings at Bairnsdale, Glens Top Hat, who was Edmonds sixth starter from only three runners since he kicked off on March 1, had to survive a protest before having the win confirmed.
“It’s fantastic. Didn’t pay a lot of money for this horse. Bought it on-line. Put some good people into it ... some new clients from down here, as well as some existing clients and a few family members, so it was a fantastic effort. I’m stoked actually,” Edmonds said, speaking to Racing.com post-race.
But then Edmonds then had to take a deep breath when a protest ... second against first ... was lodged, but that all ended well for the Edmonds stable with the stewards dismissing the protest.
“Initially, I didn’t know what to think of the protest, because it was a bit of a battle on the track,” said Edmonds, “but, once I’d viewed the footage, I didn’t think there was much in it.
“It has been tough. I don’t have many horses in work, so I’m obviously looking for a few more, but it is what it is, and I’ve just got to place them well which I hope I have done today ... and we got the cash, so it’s really good. I enjoyed it.
“Currently I only have the three horses ... Glens Top Hat, Parachuter and Unzaga ... in training and there are a couple in pre-training as well.
“When I started training back with dad on the first day of the 2019/2020 season. I was already stepping into an established business.
“It’s obviously very different setting things up from scratch ... and learning the business side of things as well as you go along can be a bit daunting ... but I think we have got a good handle on it now.”
The stable still has a long way to go to get where it wants to be, but the important take away from yesterday’s meeting is that the Edmonds' first, confidence building winner is on the board, and for a stable looking to get its name out there and grow, nothing attracts attention like a winner!
