Winno is on asignment for HRO ... reporting from Hong Kong
Well, I was left with egg on my face after declaring the Hong Kong champion GOLDEN SIXTY could not win the LONGINES Hong Kong International Mile first up in December. In fact, many of my Hong Kong friends were very unhappy with me – so I issued a public apology!
Since that run Golden Sixty suffered an injury to his left foreleg.
Golden Sixty is looking to rewrite history in the FWD Champions Mile by winning it for the fourth consecutive time after posting his first victory in the race in 2021.
He has been back on track with a barrier trial on the 2nd April.
Trainer Francis Lui has indicated he will have one more trial before stepping out for his final career start in the HK$22 million FWD Champions Mile.
Golden Sixty holds the Hong Kong record for winning stakes at HK$165.8 million and 11 Group 1 wins.
Vincent Ho, his regular rider, has made a comeback as well after suffering injuries to his neck and fingers after a race fall at Sha Tin in January. He made his comeback to racing in the Happy Valley meeting on 10 April 2024.
Ho is looking to create history in the race as well – if he can win the race again it will be the first time any jockey has won the race for five consecutive years after he won the race in 2020 aboard Southern Legend for Casper Fownes.
Can this pair of champions reunite for one of the most memorable swan songs in international racing?
Time will tell!
