WINNO'S KILCOY KASH - KILCOY CUP DAY - JUNE 2, 2024
By Darren Winningham | Friday, May 31, 2024
A massive 7 race program on a Sunday at Kilcoy – the Club has told me that all the reserved areas have been booked out for weeks!
This weekend the track is rated ‘soft’ at the time of writing and the rail is in the true position for the entire circuit. As always, the nature of the track does sometimes tend to favour horses who have won here – and horses that race on the speed.
NB: As these selections were made prior to race-day, please check for any changes to track conditions and for any scratchings on the day.
Race 1
Start the day with a BM60 over 1900 metres.
“Muppy” Hellyer has found his way back to Kilcoy to ride one for Adam & Dallas Simpson – Sarodec (2). To be fair he does follow NSW in the Origin so he is a quality person and a good jockey – terrible at poker I may say! This runner will be handy throughout from barrier 5 – won here two starts ago and should be in the race.
Selections:
2 – Sarodec 1 – Viadelamore 4 – Gold Merchant 6 – Seeress Rough chance – (10) Buddy’s Chance
Race 2
This race is a Class 2 race over 800 metres. They will go fast here, and barriers will be important.
Freakshake (4) is trained by Alyssa & Troy Sweeney and Maddy Wishart will ride. A recent winner at Warwick over the distance in good time. Then desperately unlucky at Esk when carrying 64 kilograms when he missed the start and then got knocked over in the straight at a vital stage.
Naval Anthem (1) has had a stable change from Tasmania to QLD with John Keys. He likes wet tracks, and he has had a solid enough barrier trial, although I think he could have done a little more in the trial. Apprentice Mitch Goring will ride and claim 4 kilograms.
Selections:
4 – Freakshake 1 – Naval Anthem 3 – Rhumb Line 6 – Island Tide
Race 3 KEITH BEAVIS AND CARL BARTELS MEMORIAL CUP
A Class 2 race over 1500 metres.
A wonderful story behind the naming of this race (see above)– long term supporters of the Club – they are honoured each year with this race.
Cluster’s Rein is trained by Kathy Stabe. Two starts ago was run down in the shadows of the post. I think that run would suggest he may get the job done here – another nice ride for Michael Hellyer.
The danger is Italian Virtuoso (2), trained by Trevor Lambourn and who will be ridden by apprentice Dylan Bennett. He did win here two starts ago before a solid effort at Warwick over the same distance.
Selections:
4 – Cluster’s Rein 2 – Italian Virtuoso 8 – Saturday Glory 5 – Little Show
Race 4
First leg of the Quaddie and the last leg of the early Quaddie.
A maiden race over 1200 metres.
Allezizzy (1) is a natural leader and likes to ping the gates and dominate. The track should suit these tactics and this Trevor Lambourn trained filly should get along in front with Les Tilley riding.
The danger is Worldy Spirit (9) who is having her third career start. Trained by Jim Hanna and apprentice Olivia Webb will ride again.
Selections:
1 – Allezizzy 9 – Worldly Spirit 3 – Must Be The Money 2 – Gypsy White Socks
Race 5
First leg of the Treble. Another maiden race over 1200 metres.
I like one here at nice odds – Chockablock (5). Trained by Wayne Nugent – she is having her third start for the stable. She has finished second in her starts for the new yard. Apprentice Jade Metcalfe will ride and clam 3 kilograms. She has drawn well and should relish the 1200 metres as she has finished off strong in both of her starts over 1000 metres. Dare I Say (6) is one to keep safe – has failed on heavy tracks recently. Maybe with a firmer surface she can improve.
Chris Munce scratched Rupert’s Jewell (11) from the previous race for this race. The stable apprentice Tahlia Fenlon will ride. The filly has drawn well and from barrier 3 she should be well placed throughout.
Selections:
5 – Chockablock 6 – Dare I Say 11 – Rupert’s Jewell 7 – Meet In Brazil Rough chance – (8) Shotgun Sixtyfour
Race 6 LADBROKES KILCOY CUP
The 2024 Ladbrokes Kilcoy Cup at BM65 grade over 1200 metres.
Fighting Idol (8) comes off a solid effort at Rockhampton and is trained by Neil Hocking with Justin Stanley to ride. He is only a lightly raced four-year-old. There is some genuine speed in this race – I think that permits him to sit midfield and make a move on the turn and get the job done.
Just Looking (13) is on the quick back up after winning at the Sunshine Coast last weekend. He is trained by Bryan Dais and Samantha Collett will ride. The mare is drawn well in barrier 4 – does normally race midfield and will need some luck late.
Thunder Mania is trained by Sheila Laxon and John Symons with Michael Hellyer to ride. Is a last start winner at Warwick in good time. He normally races close to the speed as well – so he should be ideally suited at this track.
Never Give Up (5) is trained by Geran Racing. Resumed with a solid win at Toowoomba (his home track). Apprentice Karl Zechner will ride him again here. Has an ideal barrier draw – barrier 3.
Masterplan (3) is trained and will be ridden by Brad Stewart. He has an exceptional record on this track with five starts for three wins. He does like to lead and get his own way in front. He is looking for a hat trick of wins after his last start win at Esk where he was too good. He does have to carry a mammoth 62.5 kilograms.
Selections:
8 – Fighting Idol 13 – Just Looking 10 – Thunder Mania 5 – Never Give Up Rough chance – (3) Masterplan
Race 7
The last race of the day. A BM55 over 1200 metres.
Paul Shailer and Sean Cormack combine with Alpine Lady (11) who has drawn barrier 1. Ideally placed in this class of race. She is having her second start for her new stable. First up at Grafton she struck a heavy track, and she resented the going. So put a pen through that start and look at her previous performances when she was trained by Joe Cleary where she thrived on soft and good going.
Mighty Judd (10) is trained by Sharryn Livingstone and apprentice Julie Busuttin will ride claiming 4 kilograms. The gelding is resuming after an 18-week spell and has won a barrier trial at Deagon recently in good style. Looks well placed and Sharryn does love this track – she trained her first ever winner here!
Smiling Zac (7) is trained by Mark Currie. Last start winner at Gatton when he raced on the speed over 1100 metres. He has drawn barrier 16 and has never won over this distance. A few things against him here.
Paballo (17) will be ridden by Michael Hellyer for James Moore. He is third up now – not really done that much since resuming. Barrier 3 and the ability to race on the speed at this track may see him get into the placings.
S Selections:
11 – Alpine Lady 10 – Mighty Judd 7 – Smiling Zac 17 – Paballo Rough chance – (14) By By Music _______________________________________________________________________

Sean Cormack, Michael Hellyer and Samantha Collett all have some nice chances. I think that NSW will be the victor – a win to Michael “Muppy” Hellyer.
